How to Roll a Joint
Joints are a great way to enjoy Cannabis. It is often one of the most convenient and common methods used for consuming Cannabis. Just like learning how to ride a bike, learning how to roll a joint gets better with practice and its important that you practice with the correct techniques so that you can master it.
There are many different methods for to roll a joint. We will show you what we believe is the best method for preparing the best joints. Read through this step by step guide so you can can start rolling your own joints. Please make sure that you roll properly to avoid improper burning of the joint.
Step 1: Select your rolling papers
You can choose from many different shapes and sizes when it comes to rolling. This is personal preference, depending on what type of paper you want you can choose from hemp paper to rice paper (healthier options) or you can stick to the old school zig zag’s because you may like the way it burns, its all up to you.
The longer the paper the harder it is to roll, but if you use the proper technique it will work for any size. The size of paper you use should depend on how much Cannabis you grind up.
Step 2: Break up (Grind) your Cannabis
Grinding your Cannabis is when you take it from its original nug form into a ground up material. It is mandatory that you grind up your Cannabis before you roll your joint, otherwise it won’t burn or smoke properly!
There are different methods to grinding as well, and some believe these affect the way the joint burns and smokes. Many believe that the natural method of using your fingers is the best way to grind it up, they believe due to the coarse grinding it slows down the burn and makes a joint last longer. You can also use scissors which tend to also result in coarse ground up bud, but the most convenient and common method used is with a grinder. This device breaks up the Cannabis very quickly and effortlessly. You can use a grinder to quickly break up your nugs into a fine ground up product, which many people prefer.
Whichever method you choose, aim to have the ground Cannabis roughly the same size to make sure the joint burns evenly. Make sure that you have seperated all the stems and seeds from your product as they can poke holes through your joint, which will cause the joint to turn off and you’ll have to reroll your joint.
Step 3: (Optional) Enhance/mix your joint
Many Cannabis users like to mix up or enhance their Cannabis. This is a way of altering the effects of the joint. The most common practice which we don’t recommend is mixing your Cannabis with tobacco. It is more common in Europe than in North America but many like to mix their product with tobacco with usually a 50/50 ratio and prefer the taste and effect. Other tend to mix with tobacco, so they don’t get as high since mixing with tobacco will decrease the high effect.
Another method used to enhance joints is by adding hash (bubble hash, hashish, kief, etc) which is a great way to make a less potent strain more effective. You use a paperclip to pick up your hash, heat it up and once it is very soft it will fall off the paperclip and you can mix the warm hash into your ground up flower. It will mix very easily if you heat it up properly. Make sure you don’t burn it too much and only heat it up by keeping the lighter at a slight distance.
You can also enhance the joint by adding concentrates (shatter, distillate, rosin, budder, cbd-isolate, etc). This is best done when you mix it with the bud prior to rolling. It makes it so the joint burns more evenly rather than when you add the concentrate in the middle of rolling or at the end of the rolling session. You want to get the concentrate soft enough to mix with the ground up bud by using your fingers or a hot surface. Once you do that separate the buds into smaller pieces, expect to get your fingers sticky! Also make sure you don’t use too much concentrate to flower ratio or your joint won’t burn and smoke properly.
Step 4: Prepare a Filter (optional, but preferred)
This is also an optional step, but it is one that Medicine Man very much recommends. A good filter will make the joint a lot smoother and burn more evenly. We recommend purchasing filter tips for rolling joints as they are convenient and cut to the exact size. You can also make your own filter paper. You just need a business card or a thick paper that you can use. The size of the filter depends on how long and thick the joint is. If you are preparing your own filter make sure to cut it to the appropriate length. The longer the filter the more chance your joint will burn evenly.
Roll up the filter and you are ready for the next step.
Step 5: Roll the joint
Do not roll a loose joint, make sure it’s tight but not too tight that you can’t inhale through it, meaning air should be able to go through and in between the bud. Don’t roll with stems as they dont enhance the experience and can also make holes and tear through the joint. Rolling the joint has different methods we will show you the 3 of the most prefered, popular, and simple ways to roll.
This is known to be the best way to roll a joint, primarily because it is the most even burning joint and it pulls very smoothly. It is also the most difficult type of joint to roll. First you must start by choosing your paper, short or long, then you start with adding the filter at the front of the joint. You will add your Cannabis along the paper, but as you get to the other side of the paper you add more to make it thicker as you get to the end of the joint.
You are preparing a cone shape even before you roll it.
Now you must start by using your thumbs to compress the weed, push down and roll your thumbs up and down trying to shape the Cannabis. You do the whole paper together and then you start by tightening the filter, once you roll the filter tight you slowly work your way down the joint rolling and tightening as you get to the end. Once you have reached the end of the joint and it’s rolled nice and firm (but not too firm) proceed by licking the glue strip of the paper and roll the joint into its finished form.
Now you can push in the Cannabis through the open end of the joint with a pencil or pen to tighten it up, twist up the tip and you are ready to go.
Old School Joint
This is the common joint you are used to seeing usually its straight along the whole joint. You can also roll this joint with the filter inside before you start rolling, but if you are new to rolling we recommend that you put the filter after you roll the joint. You must choose your rolling paper, evenly spread out your Cannabis along the paper, and start rolling and compressing the paper and shaping the weed under it by rolling up and down with your thumbs. Start from the middle and go to one side then the other.
Once rolled up tightly you can lick the strip and finish rolling the joint from the middle up. Now tighten one end of the joint and push in the filter to the other side. Make sure you filter is the correct size to fit into the joint.
Fat joint (Magic Carpet)
A magic carpet is a great way to fit in a lot of Cannabis into one joint. They burn with a big circumference and it will hit you very hard! Definitely recommend smoking this with friends. You start by getting two rolling papers, and licking one of the them and sticking it to the bottom of the other paper. Now you have a super wide area to fit your Cannabis.
Some papers come prepared for rolling Magic Carpet joints. Fill it up and roll it up tightly, lick the strip and close it shut. Tighten the joint by pushing in a pen or something of similar shape into the ends of the joint, add the filter paper and close the other side up!
Step 6: Lighting the joint
Lots of people forget how important this step is. It is very important that you light the joint properly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Nothing is more annoying than a joint running the whole time and not smoking properly!
You must start by lighting the end of the joint slowly. You must roast it without inhaling and let it get lit up evenly around the joint. Don’t light it too fast or you will start it unevenly. Once the joint is evenly lit, start puffing and keep the lighter at the tip of the joint. After the first few puffs when you notice it’s lit all around you can go ahead and smoke it without the lighter.
Step 7: Smoking the joint
When you are smoking the joint make sure you take even draws from the joint. Don’t pull too hard or you will cause the joint to run. Pull at a nice pace and don’t rush your joint! Make sure to pass the joint to the left after 2 puffs unless you are smoking alone, then you decide the rules.
Make sure you enjoy your joint and smoke high quality Cannabis for the best joint experience. Hopefully this guide on how to roll a joint from the Medicine Man has helped you!
